Welcome back to Festies and thanks so much for being here. Before we dive into today's episode, we need to give rj and penny a huge congratulations on their wedding. They're married.

Vanessa:

They were with us for the Coachella recap, episode 17. So you guys have heard them before and, yeah, this is their big weekend and it was like the most fun wedding I've ever been to.

Sunny:

Tell me all about it.

Vanessa:

It was just a huge reunion of all their friends that we used to go to music festivals with

Sunny:

Hell yeah.

Vanessa:

So that was awesome. There was so many people there that I hadn't seen since, like the last time I went to Coachella which was what? Six years ago maybe? So, yeah, it was really nice to catch up. And well, I posted a video of us all dancing on the dance floor fun and one of our other friends that wasn't there commented and was like I'm so sad I missed this rave

Sunny:

your voice is kind of raspy.

Sunny:

Were you yelling?

Vanessa:

I think that's from this weekend, and it's what? What day is it Wednesday? That my voice has been gone all week

Sunny:

that means you had a great time. I think they're our first festival friends to get married.

Vanessa:

Right?

Sunny:

and like everyone's getting married, everyone's getting married now. It's like a big trickle down effect, like shout out to Carol and Colin, who are getting married this coming weekend. So they were friends that I met Through them too. The officiant for his wedding is getting married in November. Like everyone's like engaged and getting married. It was just it's nice to see,

Sunny:

including yourself

Vanessa:

and me, yeah, so yeah, it was a lot of fun.

Sunny:

Well, congrats to them again. We're so happy for you.

Vanessa:

We got more exciting stuff. Well, not more exciting than that, but we've continue. We just had outside lands, then this rave Just kidding Wedding, and then we have another music festival coming up. Gosh, don't tell my mother, she'll get so mad.

Sunny:

We have Austin City Limits coming up. If you have been listening to this podcast, you know we've been talking about this for what a year now.

Vanessa:

Oh, that we're going to go. Yeah, I feel like all the other ones we've talked about this year. We've been to at least once, but this is the new one for us that we've never been to.

Sunny:

Yeah,

Vanessa:

what we're going to talk about is the schedule and the people that are on here that we want to see. But I was going through this and I was like I don't even know the layout of this place,

Sunny:

Vanessa:

like I'm over here being like maybe we can see 15 minutes of this person then run over to this person, it's like what if they're like a mile apart?

Vanessa:

can't tell you how many times I was like I don't know the geography

Vanessa:

we need to know the geography and we were looking at like aerial shots of austin city limits and we're like I can't tell. Like this looks like it's all just one big park. But I was like,

Sunny:

yeah,

Vanessa:

this could also be like miles and miles apart like I don't know.

Sunny:

You need to find the um, what's it called? The scale.

Vanessa:

Yeah,

Sunny:

I'm excited to do this, because we've actually never done this

Vanessa:

Sunny:

before like sit down and actually talk about it,

Sunny:

Vanessa:

this is going to be interesting to no one but us okay,

Sunny:

we're gonna yeah, we're gonna really try not to be rambly.

Sunny:

So you and I, we prepare for festivals differently. You, as soon as the playlist comes out like the official playlist for the festival, you just have that on repeat.

Vanessa:

Yeah,

Sunny:

Listening to it

Vanessa:

Lately. That's how I've been doing it.

Sunny:

Clark and I will wait till the set times come out, and then we do our research.

Vanessa:

That makes sense. You don't want to create conflicts for yourself before they, even before the scheduling comes out. Huh.

Sunny:

Yeah, so we go line by line and then we look up live videos, because sometimes someone's recorded music can be different than their live performance. You know,

Vanessa:

yeah,

Sunny:

within the first minute we know if we like it or not and we turn it off.

Vanessa:

But do you like scroll to the middle or something?

Sunny:

Sometimes, yeah,

Vanessa:

okay, I was like sometimes the first minute is like either too slow or

Sunny:

Right, yeah,

Vanessa:

or they go out with a bang and then the rest of it's different.

Sunny:

Yeah, we usually do that too. We scroll to the middle. This time I got a little crazy with the color coding. I have some that are in pink, which are like the must-sees, like no, nothing's gonna get in the way.

Vanessa:

God, I wish I had color coded.

Sunny:

And then I have yellow, which is I liked it, and green, which is like I really liked it.

Vanessa:

Okay,

Sunny:

but any yellows or greens I can still be talked out of,

Vanessa:

okay,

Sunny:

does that make sense?

Vanessa:

yeah, I just circled them all in black. Yeah, but there's a lot where I'm like I mean, I know which ones are like the must sees

Sunny:

Right.

Vanessa:

Do you want to start with Friday?

Sunny:

Yeah.

Vanessa:

Also, how early did you start? Because the music starts at 1245 and it goes till 10.

Sunny:

We went through each line.

Vanessa:

You did, oh, we did not Friday.

Vanessa:

We kind of did Saturday and Sunday. We're like let's leave the morning up to sunny and clark, because we know none of these names. And I mean for the whole festival there's a lot of names we don't know. But ed was like do we have to go in at 12 every day? I'm like I mean we don't have to but, you know sunny and clark, so let's just leave it up to them

Sunny:

Vanessa:

just my first, first part of the day

Sunny:

friday's I have no must sees, really

Vanessa:

Sunny:

None, nothing in pink. The green ones, which are artists that I really like, were Johnny Stimson, Girl Tones and Maggie Antone. I hope I'm saying that right.

Vanessa:

Oh, Ed really wants to see Maggie Antone.

Sunny:

Perfect, then let's extra circle.

Vanessa:

But one of my must sees is Jensen McRae, who's at the same time as Maggie.

Sunny:

Ohh,

Vanessa:

but she ends like 15 minutes after, so hopefully, if they're close. They're close, we can catch the last 15 minutes. I don't know, I guess. I guess she's not a must see, but just on the playlist she's one that really stood out to me and I really liked one of her songs. But I I can see her some other time. I think she's a newer artist

Sunny:

up and coming.

Sunny:

Yeah, this is the benefit of the way you do it, because you're listening to the artists over and over again. You remember them.

Vanessa:

Yeah,

Sunny:

when Clark and I do this, I circle what I like and then I forget and I just trust my past self when I get to the festival that I'm gonna go to, where I want to go,

Vanessa:

yeah, you don't have any must-sees.

Vanessa:

You don't want to see Cage the Elephant? I thought that would be like a must-see for you.

Sunny:

I've seen Cage the Elephant

Vanessa:

oh okay. I really want to see Dylan Gossett and Luke Combs. I feel like those two are like my must-sees this day.

Sunny:

I think the big debate about this day is Hosier versus Luke

Vanessa:

thought ed like really wanted to see Hozier, just because we've already seen luke combs twice this year at festivals. But he was like, yeah, well, I like luke combs better than hozier, so let's just see luke combs I was like okay great. I mean I, I love him too. So I'm down to see him again and I really wanted to see him with you guys

Sunny:

oh, problem solved.

Sunny:

Actually, you know, what is funny about friday is we're trusting you guys for the end of the day, and then you're trusting us for the beginning.

Vanessa:

Well, kind of we also kind of really want to see Crowe boys.

Sunny:

Okay,

Vanessa:

that's at like two,

Sunny:

Vanessa:

. And then King Princess and Role Model. We really like, we like, but we don't. I mean we don't need to see them. But

Sunny:

yeah,

Vanessa:

these are the ones that I circled. And then Sam Barber I really want to see, and then Empire of the Sun.

Vanessa:

It was like empire sun versus cage the elephant

Sunny:

I have confidence man, at that time

Vanessa:

I don't even think we listened to confidence man, because there was already so many people circled around that time frame that we're like let's not add anything to the

Sunny:

Vanessa:

but maybe we should have, maybe they we would have liked them better than the other ones

Sunny:

no, we did that too.

Sunny:

Sometimes we're like, okay, there's no point in looking at anything else right line.

Sunny:

Right because we have it figured out.

Sunny:

Yeah, I think we should try and catch johnny stimson who's at 115. I know that's early, but he's a solo act singer, songwriter. Like really pretty falsetto but like soulful pop, r&b so right up, right up our alley. Um, but he's also signed by elton john's rocket records.

Sunny:

I thought that's pretty cool

Vanessa:

yeah,

Sunny:

so yeah, I want to check

Vanessa:

what is girl tones. Is that edm?

Sunny:

girl. No, they're so opposite. They're sisters from south central kentucky.

Vanessa:

they're a high energy rock duo, not necessarily the music I gravitate towards, but when I watched a little bit that I did I was like, yeah, girl power so

Vanessa:

they're at the same time as crowe boys.

Vanessa:

So I'll listen to them and see how I feel.

Sunny:

Vanessa:

You'd split the time too.

unless it is a big deal, and the distance is really far,

I have in yellow which are the people I liked Eric Slick at 12.15, ted Hammig and the campaign at 1 o'clock. South Arcade at 1.30. Damn, there's so many on here. I'm sorry. But again these are just people like I liked it.

Vanessa:

You don't need to see it.

Sunny:

Vanessa:

okay, I'm going to circle those with a different color.

Sunny:

Yeah, I was like this is going to be one of Sunny's must-sees. I know it. But you have them in green, which means you really like them.

Sunny:

I do really like it, but a must-see for us is Leisure, which is 215 to 315.

Vanessa:

Okay, we did not circle leisure. I remember ed being like I like this and I was like I don't know if I do, but I didn't even circle it.

Sunny:

Well, clark has been into them for a really long time. They're like an indie pop, funk,

Vanessa:

Sunny:

synth group and actually they have a new album coming out september 12th. We should check out the new album before we go over there.

Vanessa:

Well, I mean, we can see a whole bunch of them and then go to Don West

Sunny:

depending on the geography.

Vanessa:

Yeah, it's a nothing commute we were just watching um euro trip and the he said that in it and we were like for some reason cracking up

Sunny:

Do you have any other must sees?

Vanessa:

Spacey Jane, Marina, and then we have Latin Mafia and South Hall, but they're both at the exact same time. And then we have Doechii.

Sunny:

Vanessa:

I don't know, d-j-o.

Vanessa:

Sunny:

On the way to Coachella, one of the billboards was, like it's pronounced, d-j-o,

Vanessa:

like just spelled out

Sunny:

yeah, doesn't help anybody.

Vanessa:

And then Sabrina Carpenter for me is a must see. I know that in the past we've chosen to go to the legendary acts because it's like, okay, when are you ever going to see them? I'm assuming The Strokes are a legendary act

Sunny:

they are,

Vanessa:

be completely honest and say I don't know who they are, I don't really care to see them. So I'm gonna go see Sabrina Carpenter.

Vanessa:

I'm sorry

Sunny:

that is fine with us we saw the strokes at outside lands

Vanessa:

that's what I thought I was like. I think I've already seen them. Anyways,

Sunny:

A must-see for me is also La Lom.

Our friend Aaron took Clark to see La Lom, and La Lom stands for Los Angeles League of Musicians

Vanessa:

Vanessa:

Yeah, and they both of them said it was really fun, so I'm kind of just taking their word for it.

I feel like there's no one else around that exact same time.

I'm circled. Well, maybe we can split time. I know Marina. I like a couple of her songs but I'm not like a huge like I have to see her.

I know that they're good and I like some of their stuff. I just they're not like a must see for me. I don't know.

Oh, we should have talked about that first. Yeah, so Doja Cat pulled out. She was the Sunday headliner and was replaced by The Killers

Vanessa:

you sent the screenshot and then you just typed the killers. No official article or anything. You just wrote the killers in all caps. I was like I mean, she wants the killers. Yeah, that'd be great, but I didn't. I didn't think that was actually happening

yeah, I'm stoked on the killers being on the lineup now, but I kind of have the same, um the same attitude I had towards Sabrina Carpenter replacing Tyler the Creator. I'm like it's not even.

yeah, but I feel like the genre of Austin City Limits, it's a clear genre. It's a lot of like um, yeah, well,

Sunny:

maybe. Yeah, it's a lot of indie bands, that all kind of sound similar, which is great. I mean, they're all, I like them all, but the killers, I feel like fit in perfectly with the whole theme of the or am I totally off?

Sunny:

I don't know if there's like an overall genre, but I do think there's more country on Austin City Limits lineup than other major festivals for sure

Vanessa:

but I think it has a good spread.

Vanessa:

Maybe it's just all the ones we were like choosing to listen to. That kind of sounded all similar the bends, rainbow kitten surprise,

Like I can't give you the performance you deserve. It's like do you think you gave outside lands the performance they deserved? Because everyone said you didn't. Sorry, that was kind of mean. I wasn't there, so I don't know what I'm talking about. This is just feedback, I got. So then after the screenshot, you just said the killers in all caps and I think I laughed at it.

Okay, so only basically the big headliners, and then we got to find a chance to do silent disco

Vanessa:

Sunny:

austin city limits has silent disco every night from 8 to 10

Vanessa:

we can squeeze it in before one of the headliners.

Sunny:

Sunny:

I like to go through, look up their average set list and then make really, really long playlists of the set list for every artist that we're gonna see

because I love singing along to the songs.

I don't like not knowing the songs, so if I can get my shit together in time, I will normally try and do this

no, I don't need to know the order that they're being played in. I just like to sing along to the songs. That's my favorite. Don't you enjoy concerts more if you know the songs?

The only time I do that is. Here's an example at kaboo in 2017, the um headliners that were against each other were muse and pink, and I love muse, also love pink, but I don't like love her music. I love her

Vanessa:

and there were some muse songs that I for sure wanted to see, so I wanted to go look at the set list to see what time could I leave muse

Vanessa:

to get to pink

Vanessa:

oh okay, yeah, you could use it that way too. I don't know if you want to be an extra nerd about it, you could do that

Sunny:

okay, yeah, I'm getting really excited for this.

I'm with you, though vanessa said before we came up here to record she, she was like I don't know anybody on here.

I feel like I know nobody.

It really was like doing my homework every day except for, I think, friday. The only person I knew was the headliner.
