Wh at do you call two best friends that love music festivals?
Sunny:Hmm. I guess you would call them Festies. Welcome back, Festies. This episode features our conversation with our friend Kevin. And if his voice sounds familiar, that's because he joined us back in September for episode 31, our Coachella 2026 lineup reaction episode. Vanessa's known Kevin since college, and through her, Clark and I have gotten to know him really well too. You may have heard me mention in other episodes that I had the opportunity to work at Coachella and Stagecoach back in 2019. And that opportunity was all thanks to Kevin. We wanted to have him back because aside from being our longtime festie, Kevin has worked behind the scenes in the resources department as a payroll manager for both Coachella and Stagecoach. We talked about what it's like living in the Coachella Valley for six weeks during the festivals. He gave us a glimpse into how massive events like that actually run. And we explored the community that forms around Coachella and Stagecoach. Plus, plenty of other fun details along the way. All right, let's make the jump into our conversation with Kevin.
Kevin:My very first year was 2017 And I wasn't sure what to expect going to Coachella. Like you kind of grow up and you're like, oh my god, it's Coachella, it's so cool. And then you know, you see Vanessa Hudgens and like
Vanessa:her flower crown.
Kevin:Yeah, her flower crown. You're like, okay, cool. And then you show up, but you're like, no, it's kind of like in the middle of the desert.
Vanessa:It is.
Kevin:With like half centimeter grass everywhere. So I didn't know what to expect. We were all camping, and then it just so happens that that year that I went, I was working with someone at Cal State Long Beach with Vanessa, and I was working at the bookstore, and my coworker, who was my friend at the time, she's like, Hey, I work Coachella, and we need someone to help us. And I was like, What does that mean? She's like, Well, you kind of have to move to you know the venue or near the venue for four to six weeks, and you know, you work Coachella and stage coach, and I was like, There's no way. And I graduated, and then I was working a part-time job around that time, and I asked my boss, I was like, Hey, there's this opportunity for me to go work Coachella. Can I leave work for six weeks? And my boss was like, 'Are you sure you want to do that?' I was like, I'm like, kind of, and then he's like, Well, you know what? Do it because it seems like a really cool opportunity, and you get to enjoy the festival for free, and I'm sure it's fun. I was like, Yeah, okay, cool. So I go to Coachella, and Sunny's worked this job once before.
Sunny:Yeah, I got a little taste.
Kevin:You have no idea what to expect because you just you go as a guest, I mean, like as a fan, and then you're behind the scenes and you're like, This is 10 times more massive than I thought that it was.
Sunny:Yeah, it's a whole city around Coachella. The festival grounds where the music is is like small, yeah, comparatively.
Kevin:So the festival is like nine different departments. So you have the production department, you have the human resource department, you have different departments. So I worked for the resources department, and they're in charge of the cleanliness and sustainability of the festival, and they staff like 300 people, 24-hour operations, both weekends, and stage coach. And so I was in the admin team, so you kind of like manage all these people, and you're there too. So it's a your first year, you're just kind of like, Can I enjoy the show? Can I not? And then you also have like a production wristband. So then, like, when you get the job, your rite of passage is basically your shift is done at 7:30. Do as you like, but remember you're still an employee, right? So you're kind of like, okay, what I do. But I mean, after doing it so many years and like so many weekends back to back, you kind of figure it out, and then it was a lot of fun. And I'm now that I have like a career job, I a lot of the things that I learned at this job, I've been able to apply it, and it's been really cool. And it's like a little Easter egg in my resume.
Vanessa:Easter egg.
Kevin:Yeah,
Vanessa:I love that. I love that your first year you're kind of like tiptoeing because you're like, I have this production wristband that gives me so much power. How much can I use it?
Sunny:Yeah.
Vanessa:You know, like the first year, you're probably just like, okay, I'm just gonna do my shift.
Kevin:Wait, wait, wait,
Vanessa:go to my sets , GA. I'd be like,
Kevin:and then they give you a golf cart and you're like, hold on. And then I get to ride this behind the sets. It's really a little bit of a culture shock, but then you also realize how much responsibility you have because you can get in trouble for anything because, like Sunny said, it's like a little town, right? Where yeah, there's security and then there's like cross guards, and then there's everything. And so
Vanessa:they have their own laws that you have to follow.
Kevin:Yeah.
Sunny:I really want to hammer the point that Coachella and Stagecoach would not be possible without this department. The whole thing runs on the back of the resources department. So thank you for your service.
Kevin:Yeah, I mean, Sunny, you too, you did it for a year.
Sunny:One year.
Kevin:My friend Chantal is the one that now is
Vanessa:uh love her.
Kevin:The one that runs like department. And I don't know how she does it because I'm like, Do you even get to enjoy the show? And she's just like, Well, I'm here, aren't I? And she's been doing it for many years, and she does Formula One and she does like all these other massive festivals, and you're just like
Sunny:she freelancers, right?
Kevin:Yeah, she's a freelancer, and they hire her to run departments basically, and so she's like the bread and butter of that department, like management-wise.
Vanessa:We'll have to have her on next.
Kevin:Yeah, that though that would be a gem. And it I would be surprised if you ever to catch her because she's always jet sitting.
Sunny:What did your day-to-day look like at Coachella and Stagecoach?
Kevin:Golden Voice was like, I guess, the entity that paid us, but I was working for Chantal and Brian Valdez, who's a director of the department. And so they basically have a house and we live there. The management team lives there, and we're supposed to be there for four to six weeks, a week before weekend one until a week after stagecoach. And so back then I used to have more flexibility with jobs. Like I was like working from home a lot of the time, so I can take my work there and kind of take the later shift at Coachella, or sometimes I would just kind of take time off to work the shows. My vacation time would be to go work, Coachella, and then I'm like, I'm fucking crazy. Why would why would I do this?
Vanessa:Do you think you could do that now?
Kevin:Absolutely not.
Vanessa:Yeah,
Kevin:so I was watching Coachella weekend one. I was just like, this year I'm not going, I'm not going. I needed to just chill, relax. And so I wasn't working it. And then I said, I'm not gonna go either. And I watched weekend one, and I was like, damn, that was really good, but not worth going. And then weekend two came around, and I was doing couch cella, and then the lady gaga set came on, and I can just imagine myself there.
Vanessa:Yeah,
Kevin:and I was like, fuck,
Vanessa:we did too. So that's that was literally us too. We called it floor chella because Ed and I were laying on the floor at Sunny's mom's house watching the Lady Gaga performance, and me and Sunny were both like, Are we busy next week? Yeah, and then Sunny ended up going, I know, but I could I couldn't go. So the same story, we were just mesmerized by Gaga.
Kevin:And Sunny, you know, like being there and seeing it is so different than watching it on TV because the crowds are so massive. So then I went Saturday and Sunday, weekend two, and just experiencing it from the other side, you're like, wow, there's so many people that go to this, like this is kind of intense, and so yeah, it's really cool. But the working there is an experience of its own because you don't realize that the festival itself employs like maybe five to nine thousand people, and a lot of them are from the communities. The Coachella Valley, it's primarily like Latino immigrant workers, and so the festival being there is for some of them their primary, their primary money, you know what I mean? And depending on where you work, you can get paid really well. Very hard work gets very well compensated. You just don't go just to walk around, you know. People that go there are really working, and so it's really endearing to see that the festival supports the community and doesn't really leave them out of an event that is supposed to be for the rich kids, you know what I mean? And I say rich kids because a ticket to Coachella is like 600, 700 bucks, you know what I mean? Yeah, just your ticket, and then you have to triple it right with food and accommodations, your other things that you need to enjoy festivals, and so it's expensive, and that's what draws me back to going. And even though the festival has a bad rap of it being like snooty and this, this, and that, at the end of the day, I'm like, it really supports this community, and so working it just kind of gives you a different perspective on it.
Vanessa:Well, that's good to know because I always hear the backlash and kind of the negativity around Coachella being in Coachella Valley and like the effects it has on that community. But it's good to get some actual information about how they support the community.
Kevin:And then back to what Sunny said about the resources department, it is also one of the largest departments of the festival, and it's in charge of the cleanliness, right? And you can only imagine having 200,000 people a night. Yeah, it's a lot of people, and so making sure that this trash and all these sustainability efforts they contain within the festival grounds, it's a big effort, and yeah, people love their job. Some of these people are walking around 12 hours making sure that the festival is clean in a 110 degrees, and you're like, wow, like this is crazy, but you know, it's
Vanessa:and that's work that like goes unseen and unnoticed. Yeah, right. Yeah, if it was gone, you would notice it in a heartbreak.
Kevin:Oh, 100%. Right. People would complain if you see two, three water bottles on the ground. But these people make sure that there's no trash, like no little wrapper, nothing. And so it's it's a well-thought out operation. And Brian Valdez, who's been doing this for almost, I want to say like 15 years, maybe more, and Chantal, who's been taking the lead too, is like the really the key to making sure that the festival runs well and that it's a global event too. So you need to make sure that you're doing a good job. You don't understand the your impact and your involvement until you kind of take a step back and you know, see, oh shoot, I was really part of that, you know. And I had a very small role, yeah.
Vanessa:So just having known you since our first days of college, and you know, we've seen each other through our terrible ups and downs.
Kevin:Yeah, our jack in a box binges as well.
Vanessa:Our jackets exactly, but no, but I'm so proud of you for going and working behind the scenes on one of the major festivals in the world, I would say.
Sunny:I know you said you play a small role, but I want to know a little more about what that role is. Like what did what did it look like?
Kevin:I got hired to do payroll, so I was like the payroll lead for our department. It's about 250, 300 employees in the department, just knowing that that's how many people are working on a 24-hour operation is really intense. So these people are working, you know, 10, 12, up to 16 hours shifts. And my role was to make sure that they were following like just regular basic employment laws, taking their breaks on time, making sure that they are uh, you know, well equipped with the their timing equipment, right? Is it their cell phone or an iPad or whatever, wherever they can check in their hours and making sure that they're getting compensated for the time that they worked. And so uh it's a lot of hard work, but also too, you need to have a lot of interpersonal skills talking to people. A lot of people are Spanish speakers, like I mentioned, Coachella Valley has a lot of like Latinos, a lot of primarily people from Mexico, and so sometimes they're farm workers or sometimes they just have uh you know blue-collar jobs and they don't have the technology, so you have to be a little bit patient with them and teach them how to use the app and making sure that they're doing that just because you want to make sure that they get compensated for their time, and it's also legally binding not to pay them for stuff. And sometimes it's like imagine your tia and tio that don't know how to use an iPhone, and you're like, Did you forget to clock in? She's like, Yeah, and then they give you like a napkin with their times, and you're like, Oh, it's so cute, you know. But you're like, do it on your phone, like there's an app for that.
Vanessa:So there's a n app for that, yeah.
Kevin:And so you kind of have to just kind of help them with that. And I think, I mean, out of 300 people, 300 characters, and a lot of returners, and so it's like a big family reunion, like going back and seeing a familiar face and meeting new people, and
Vanessa:yeah, going back year after year, you mean? Yeah,
Kevin:yeah, and it's year after year, and just kind of like, oh, you're back, thanks for coming back. It's really fun, it's really it feels like home, and who knows if I have capacity in the future to do it. Like, I really miss that aspect of it because you kind of go more for your group of people than the actual show sometimes, right?
Sunny:Yeah, I can picture this so clearly in my mind at HQ, like in the trailer, you sitting at your table and people in line waiting to talk to you. I have such a like visual image in my mind of what you're explaining.
Kevin:You know, sometimes it's just so annoying because you're just kind of like, oh my god, there's so many people, but then you gain trust with them. Like, I know that you're working 12-hour shifts, I know that you're on your feet, but please just clock in and out. You know, it's like, you know, I'm like, I really want to go see Travis Scott. I don't want to go see Travis Scott. I don't know. I really want to go see Anima. I think I missed Anima like two years ago, and I'm like, uh, but at the end of the day, I'm like, it's okay. Like it fulfills me that I'm contributing to you know a greater cause outside of the festival, and I'm I'm here. What the fuck? Like, I get a golf cart, I could go wherever I want, you know what I mean? So it's definitely like a privilege role to kind of have it and do it. So it's an experience for sure.
Vanessa:That's awesome. How many acts a day were you able to see while you were working?
Kevin:For example, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, I'd work a 12-hour shift. So I'd start my day at 7 a.m. and I would take a break. Uh like
Sunny:good shift to have
Kevin:every what four hours.
Vanessa:Okay. For how long?
Kevin:Every four hours. So my break would be like 20 to 30 minutes. And so our headquarters or like our trailer, like Sunny said, was right behind Sahara Tent. So that was like an easy one. So it's just like Peggy Gou would play or Fisher or whoever, like you just walk over there and take your lunch break there. But sometimes you have to like strategize if you want to go see. I don't know. I remember Cardi B was doing main stage at 4 p.m. And I was like, I really don't want to go see Cardi B, but I feel like it's her first year, and you kind of have to, you know, you just you you play that game where you're just like, okay, it's our first year, I have to go see it. So you go, or like vampire weekends there, you can like you bargain, right? Hey Sunny, vampire weekend's gonna play at six. Can you cover my shift?
Sunny:Yeah,
Kevin:you know what I mean? So you kind of have to like you have to negotiate, so you have to be really friendly with everybody, and uh
Vanessa:do you remember like 2018-2019? You would find times where you were, I guess, on your breaks and you would like come hang out with us for like five, 10 minutes, and you're like, Okay, I gotta go.
Sunny:Yeah,
Kevin:yeah. No, and then we actually saw Beyonce weekend one together.
Vanessa:Yes, we did.
Kevin:Yeah,
Vanessa:can you think of one thing that kind of blew your mind about festivals? Like once you entered that side of the festival world.
Kevin:My very first year working, it was uh Beychella, so whatever Beyonce performed. I think that was 2018.
Vanessa:Yeah,
Kevin:and she had her own campsite in the back, and it was like 20 to 30 trailers for her dancers and her production team. Yeah, and then I realized I was just like, whoa, like some of these performers, artists are so invested in what they do, and they have huge productions, and this is like their moment, right? Yeah, and then you just kind of realize like, no matter where you are on that lineup, you perform there. And to me, that was so cool. Like, I can only imagine what that feeling is.
Vanessa:Y eah,
Kevin:that kind of blew my mind, where it's just like, dude, I'd be a backup dancer for like I don't know, peaches. I don't like somebody like like just
Sunny:it's not too late,
Kevin:just to be like on stage and just to kind of
Vanessa:just to be on that side of it,
Kevin:just to be on that side of it because the energy that people have there is so different. It's just like coachella and it changed me, but it kind of really does, you know.
Vanessa:It kind of really does, yeah. I know I've always said that feeling of being on stage and having that many people like singing along to your music, that has to be like the best feeling in the world. I wish that I could experience that.
Kevin:It really is a world stage for these artists, and so it's kind of cool to just pick up their trash. So I didn't pick it up, you know. I h I I was part of the team that did so, but it's kind of like, whoa, that's crazy.
Sunny:And drive around the employees.
Kevin:Yeah, drive around the employees.
Vanessa:Sunny, what did you do when you worked that one year?
Sunny:I was a van driver.
Vanessa:Oh, okay.
Sunny:Which was awesome because they were like really fancy vans. So yeah, I just would pick up the employees that would arrive to the festival and then drive them to whatever post that they were going to.
Vanessa:Oh, okay.
Sunny:I felt like the first weekend was like a shit show, but then I remember the next weekend at the end of it, Alexis, who was my boss, I remember every task she asked me, I like got it, and I was like, yes, finally, I got this. And then I got sick.
Vanessa:Oh no.
Sunny:But it was so silly because they give you this map, right? And it's like a really long vertical map. And I was looking at it horizontal, and then it took just one person to be like, No, you should turn the map this way. And then this is like the this this is the middle road, and this side is the festival, and this side is the camping. And I was like, I never got lost after that.
Vanessa:We didn't even talk about like some of the festivals that you've been to. So you went to Escape, and you and I went to Hard Day of the Dead in 2015. Do you remember that? That was the last one.
Kevin:That was the very last one, dude.
Vanessa:It was on Halloween weekend, and Kevin dressed up as Skrillex.
Sunny:Hell yeah.
Vanessa:Oh, so fun.
Sunny:Do we have a picture somewhere?
Vanessa:I don't
Kevin:t hink somewhere on my Instagram. Maybe maybe Oh, Drake liked that costume, remember? Because it was me and then one of my friends dressed up as Drake, but to call me on my cell phone, Drake, and he looked very similar, and I look very similar to Skrillix, and Drake liked the picture.
Vanessa:Oh my god, that's so funny.
Kevin:But I remember we're like walking through the crowd, and everyone's really messed up, and then people are just kind of like doing double takes. It's like I'm not taking Skrillix. He was headlining that year, yeah, and then he brought out Diplo and they did Jack Hugh.
Sunny:Have you ever been to EDC Kevin?
Vanessa:Yes
Kevin:I've been twice. 2015 and 2021 2
Vanessa:I like how I answered that for him.
Sunny:he can answer for himself.
Vanessa:I know he has.
Kevin:No, you've been to EDC too, and you you know that it's a complete different monster because it's like yeah, six to six. Yeah, there's no chill vibe there.
Vanessa:I feel like it is chill if you stay till sunrise. I remember it being like, oh, it's sunrise, and we're all just kind of like swaying back and forth to something like chill.
Kevin:2021 or 22, I forget. It was like the first EDC right after the pandemic. So we flew in at 8 p.m. We're at the festival at 9, and then we leave sunrise the next day, and then Sunday, we're like, let's do the same, but let's come back around 4 a.m. Right. So we get there around 10. Factory 93, which is a techno stage, was so good. We missed our shuttle. We stayed there till 7 a.m. Like so much for like a quick in-it-out, but
Vanessa:let's just pop in.
Kevin:You can't just pop in to EDC, bitch. Like you got you're there for all 12 hours.
Sunny:Do you have a favorite festival?
Kevin:I think I'm a closeted San Francisco.
Sunny:Yeah,
Vanessa:I knew it!
Kevin:And so I always say outside lands is one of my favorite festivals.
Vanessa:We didn't even talk about that yet.
Kevin:We didn't even talk about that.
Vanessa:You came was it 2021 when it was on Halloween?
Kevin:Yes, yeah, yes.
Vanessa:So Kevin came to Outside Lands with our whole crew, and everyone loved you. Every time we go, people ask about you where you like are you if you're coming this year? Yeah.
Kevin:I think the first time I went was 2019 or 2018, Vanessa. You invited me.
Vanessa:Oh, so it wasn't Halloween.
Kevin:No, that was the second time.
Vanessa:Oh, you did go to okay, okay. Yeah, yeah. 2019 was when I made the vlog.
Kevin:Yeah. So I think Elton John or Janet Jackson had headlined the year before, and I was like, dude, this outside lands lineup is really crazy every year. So I'm like, I really want to go. Vanessa's like, oh, you really gonna like it? You should come with my friends and I. And I had no idea that Vanessa has a whole army of festie besties in San Francisco.
Sunny:Hell yeah.
Kevin:And these people literally go to every festival in San Francisco and every show. So they're like seasoned festival people, but then me in LA, opposite, right? But I was like, okay, let me try it out. I had a blast, yeah, all good vibes all weekend, and then experiencing like a new venue. The venue's really important, the vibes are really important, the fashion's really important too. And I remember Apple was had an activation there, and I had got like this Mexican blanket, and I was like, I don't want to carry that. And Vanessa's like, no, you're gonna need it because it's gonna get fucking cold later.
Sunny:Oh, yeah,
Kevin:and so it got fucking cold, and so I think I spent like $300 on food one day. I just kept going to the
Vanessa:it's so good, right?
Kevin:It's like outside lands, and then there's food lands, and then there's weed lands, and then there's wine like
Vanessa:all the lands,
Sunny:so many lands,
Kevin:the whole so many lands, and it was a blast.
Vanessa:You need to come back to outside lands with us. I know I'm for sure going in 2027.
Kevin:The goal was to go this year, but it's just been so crazy and just like recovering from festivals and then working, and you're just kinda likest k
Vanessa:This is 30, man.
Kevin:Like, I think, dude, it's it's a little intense. I'm not complaining, but also too, it's just like I'm drinking like an electrolyte once a week. Just not even because I went out, just because I need to hydrate.
Sunny:Well, I really felt for you though, when we were watching Vampire Weekend in the morning, I was like, Kevin should be here and not me.
Vanessa:I gave you a shout-out on our Outside Lands recap episode when they were talking about Vampire Weekend. I was like, Kevin, this was not a good year for you to miss outside Lands.
Kevin:I know that's the only reason why I went to that Halloween one right after the pandemic because it was a reschedule, and it was so much fun. Coachella last year, they had a surprise set, like a 30-minute set. Because of them, I went into a rabbit hole of that Grateful Dead Cult their music and all that because it's like jam music. So I'm like, oh cool, this sounds like Vampire Weekend, kind of inspired by that.
Sunny:That's exactly what we were saying.
Kevin:Yeah, it's like jammy, cool vibe. So I like it, but outside lands is amazing, and I definitely want to go back.
Vanessa:One of these years, you'll have to go to Bonnaroo with us so you can experience that monster of a festival.
Sunny:Yeah, you think Coachella's big.
Vanessa:If you think yeah, if you think Coachella's big, Jesus Christ.
Kevin:But there's always a hurricane.
Vanessa:Yeah, yeah, I know, right?
Kevin:I think I texted you that year that there was a hurricane. You're like, oh yeah, we're going to Nashville.
Vanessa:Yeah.
Sunny:Yeah, you texted us and asked if we were okay.
Kevin:Yeah, I'm like on Twitter, just like a deadly storm. I was like,
Sunny:are they dead?
Kevin:My friends are driving there.
Sunny:Oh yeah, that was so sweet that you asked if we were okay.
Kevin:Yeah, I mean, I have to see what my festie besties are doing. I wish that I had like uh some sort of checklist or like a kit before you start going to festivals, you know, but then you kind of learn and you you're like, oh my god, am I rave dad now? You know, like like people are asking me for a gum and like a lighter or like whatever, a water.
Sunny:Well, we haven't promoted it yet, but we do have a digital toolkit. Festies does. I'll share it with you, and you can be our first you can be our uh guinea pig with it.
Vanessa:If you like it, if we'll post it so that everyone can use it.
Kevin:For sure.
Vanessa:Well, awesome. You answered every question we had without us even asking it. No, we are not done.
Sunny:We have one last thing to get to, one last segment. It's called our Festies Festival lineups. And so with all of our guests, we've been doing this, we're making a pretend Festies festival, and so we ask everybody to contribute artists to it. And we have one lineup that's for living artists, and then one lineup that's for uh legends who have passed on. So who do you got?
Kevin:Obviously, the living has to be because it's somehow Coachella related, uh Daft Punk.
Vanessa:Yes, I thought you were gonna say that.
Kevin:And then passing, I think Michael Jackson would be amazing, like a dangerous tour type of vibe, you know what I mean? Yeah, like the outfits would be really cool.
Vanessa:That would be legendary.
Kevin:If Michael Jackson says he can't do it, then Prince, obviously. Oh, but I feel like Prince would be like Frank. But I think I think Prince would Prince would do like uh Frank Ocean and be like, you know what? Like, I'm not gonna perform, I'm just gonna stand there.
Sunny:We actually already have Prince on the lineup, so
Vanessa:oh we do. That's right. So Michael Jackson said yes.
Kevin:Okay, Michael Jackson said yes.
Sunny:They can battle it out on who's headlining Kevin, thank you so much for being on Festies. It's really exciting to have you on here.
Vanessa:So much fun.
Kevin:I did have a lot of fun. I missed you guys.
Vanessa:Yeah, we missed you too.
Kevin:It's funny because we only meet up at festivals now, literally.
Vanessa:So come visit. The last time I saw Kevin, uh, Ed and I were down there for Cali Vibes, and he we stayed at his house.
Kevin:Oh, you stayed at my apartment.
Sunny:Oh, I didn't even know that.
Vanessa:Stayed at his apartment, yeah. Yeah, okay. I'm gonna close this out. Otherwise, we'll talk forever. Yes. Thank you so much, Kevin.
Kevin:Of course.
