Cold Open And 50th Remote

Vanessa

Hey, Sunny.

Sunny

Yeah, Vanessa?

Vanessa

What do you call two best friends that love music festivals?

Sunny

Hmm. I guess you'd call them Festies.

Clark

Music. Festivals. Friendship. Festies

Sunny

Hello, Festies. Thanks for joining us today. If it's your first time joining us, you have joined us for a very special episode because this is our what is it, Vanessa?

Vanessa

50th. I can you believe that? It's our 50th episode.

Sunny

I can't. Like I can and I can't at the same time.

Vanessa

I remember in the beginning we were like, if we could just get to 20, that'd be cool.

Sunny

Yeah. Yeah, yeah. We also have Clark with us today, our lovely engineer. And this is also a very special episode because it is our first episode where Vanessa is in Iowa.

Vanessa

Yeah, I'm not in the same room as you guys.

Clark

She's in Iowa.

Sunny

This is our test run of our first um remote.

Clark

Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, no, I mean remote, yeah.

Iowa Move Stories And Cats

Vanessa

My family and friends could never remember where I was moving to. They'd always say Ohio, Idaho, Indiana. So we went to this store called Ray Gun, which is like this cool t-shirt store that has all these like weird sayings and all this stuff. And one of the shirts was Iowa. No way. It was like a combination of all three of like Iowa, Idaho, and Ohio. And I bought it. I should go look and see what it is. But it's I think it's Ida, Ohio. Ida, Ohio, I think is what it is.

Clark

Ida, Ohio.

Vanessa

I should just send one to all my family and be like, this is where Vanessa is, Ida, Ohio. Yeah. Nice. That's pretty good.

Clark

This is this is the tribe that's out there is Ida, Ohio.

Sunny

Yeah. But how was the move, Vanessa? Tell us all about it.

Vanessa

Oh my gosh. I mean, it was a move. It sucked. Like moving suck. I feel like moving houses sucks already, but like moving across the country is a whole other thing. Our journey to Iowa wasn't as terrible as our journey back to California three years ago. Because that time we kept breaking down and in auto shop after auto shop, trying to fix whatever was wrong with Ed's truck and like spending hours on the side of the highway in the blazing desert sun. But this time we only had two incidents where the tires on his trailer popped. It was like two hours in. Oh my goodness. We were like in Sacramento when the first one popped. Thankfully, he had a spare. He put it on. It was flat.

Sunny

Oh no.

Vanessa

So then we had so then we had to go to the nearest gas station. Of course, the air was out of order. Of course. I told him on the side of the road. I was like, don't you have a compressor on your truck? And I don't know if it didn't register what I was saying, but then once we were at the gas station, he was like, Oh, I have a compressor on my truck. I'm like, I told you that on the side of the road. Anyway, so that was fixed. So then we drove to Reno and we got it replaced. The spare.

Clark

Okay.

Vanessa

And 15 minutes later, the other tire popped. Oh no. Thank God we got that tire replaced before. Yeah. So then the next time we stopped, he just replaced the rest of them. And then we had no more issues after that.

Clark

Nice.

Vanessa

I was shocked at how quickly everything got done with the tires. We pulled up to the first place, we had it in like 15 minutes, the replacement tire. And then the next place, it was like not even an hour, and all his tires were replaced, and then we were off again.

Sunny

Oh good.

Vanessa

Yeah.

Sunny

How long did the drive take?

Vanessa

So we left 4 30-ish Monday morning and we got to Iowa Tuesday night at like 9 p.m. So two days.

Clark

Well, I mean, all we're still flying though. That's still like across the country and with the tire fiascos.

Vanessa

We stopped in oh gosh, what was it? Rock Springs, Wyoming, or something like that. Oh yeah. Um, that was our first. Like, we have to get here because we got like a hotel reservation to sleep here.

Clark

Yeah.

Vanessa

And the cats were okay. The cats did a little bit better than well, no. Frank had a little bit of an anxiety attack, I think. He like threw up.

Clark

Oh yeah.

Vanessa

And then he was like drooling. Oh yeah. Apparently that's like an anxious thing or something. And then yeah, he was panting like a dog.

Clark

Yep, yep.

Vanessa

My poor Fanky.

Sunny

Oh, little Frank.

Vanessa

Then like I cleaned out his carrier a little bit and then he just stayed in there. I opened it, but he like wouldn't get out. He just stayed in there for like the rest of the day.

Clark

He's like, I don't trust you.

Vanessa

Penny was fine. We let her out and she was like roaming the car. She found her favorite little spot. It was at Christina's legs in the passenger seat. My sister.

Clark

Oh, that's nice.

Sunny

So I'm curious to know have you stuck to leaving the cats downstairs and not letting them in your room? I have. It's been hard. I don't think they like it here.

Clark

Yeah.

Vanessa

Well, they they like it here, but they don't like that.

Sunny

I didn't have faith in you guys, to be honest. I was like, eh, they're gonna cave.

Vanessa

I thought Ed would cave first for sure. I mean, we feel terrible that when we leave them downstairs, but they'll adjust. Yeah. But yeah, I mean, I don't know, it's definitely an adjustment for sure. I don't think I talked about it on here about how hard it like actually was to leave. And so I think if I would have stayed and never moved back to California, I feel like it'd be easier because I was like already like established, I had my job, I had my friends. And so it just seems like it's gonna take a while to get back into that flow, I guess.

Settling In And House Projects

Sunny

Well, I'm glad you came back. I am too.

Vanessa

I am too for sure.

Sunny

For a little bit. Oh, yeah, how's the house?

Vanessa

It's great. I mean, we have a house, but we underestimated how much work it was gonna be, which is fine. You know, Ed can do anything. Yeah, but our mantra's been like, you know, just one thing at a time. Focus on one thing at a time. One thing at a time. So right now he's been working on the shed. That's gonna be like his shop, and it looks night and day different so from when we first got here. So he's already making good progress there.

Clark

Dope.

Vanessa

Which I knew was gonna be the first thing that he worked on was his shop. Yeah, his happy place. Exactly.

Clark

Having that ready makes a lot of sense for the show. It does, it totally does. Yeah, yeah.

Sunny

Because then he can work out of their podcast studio, is the next project. Next. Yeah, I'm just kidding. I wish I knew that the last time we recorded at our loft in Menlo Park was gonna be the last time. Yeah, I would have last time. I would have savored. I just quoted my own song. Um, I would have savored it a little more, you know?

Vanessa

Well, I think we can do another one in August. I'll be over there in August.

Sunny

Oh, okay, cool. We'll make time. Never mind. It's also just as exciting to have our 50th episode be our first remote one. So I'm not gonna be sorry. It's like a good landmark. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I just saw the outline you put moving sucks.

Vanessa

Oh, yeah. We don't even have that much stuff. Yeah, we didn't bring any furniture. It was literally just like our bed and the piano were the two biggest things.

Sunny

So it was Bed Chella for you. It was CouchC hella.

Vanessa

Because yeah, even though we don't have furniture, the people that own the house, they left a bunch of furniture here for us. Like dining tables. We have a beautiful dining table, um, two recliners, one couch, one little love seat. So we do have stuff. Oh cute. Yeah, yeah.

Clark

It wasn't it wasn't cardboard Box Chella.

Vanessa

No, it wasn't Box Chella. It was not Box Chella, it was Couch Chella. And like Ed had just put up our TV. We have like a stone fireplace, chimney, whatever. I don't know.

Clark

Well, chimney's connected to a fireplace, but yeah, yeah. Sorry.

Vanessa

Thank you. So he like bolted it up onto the stone that's on our wall.

Clark

Oh, cool.

Vanessa

Yeah, it looks cool. Ooh, pretty.

FloorChella Origin And Setup

Clark

Yeah, that's sick.

Vanessa

We had our Wi-Fi in time for Coachella.

Clark

Yeah.

Sunny

This year, me, Vanessa, and Clark were not able to attend Coachella, but we did our own version of Coachella, which we call FloorChella. Vanessa, you want to you want to say where we got that name from?

Vanessa

Yeah, so last year in 2025, we were like so sad we couldn't be there and wanted to see Lady Gaga. So we were like, we have to see Lady Gaga together. Yeah. So Ed and I went to Sunny's mom's apartment, and you guys were sitting on the couch, and like she had this like fuzzy white rug. Yeah. So that's where Ed and I decided to like lay down and watch this performance. So we were calling it FlooChella because it was always like CouchChella, you know? Coachella, CouchChella, it sounds similar. Yeah, I think it was like during COVID that term came about. Yep. So then we were like, no, it's FloorChella tonight for us because we were laying on the floor watching it. So that's where FloorChella came about.

Sunny

Yeah, and we stuck to that for Saturday and we also watched it on the floor.

Clark

Yeah.

Sunny

Nice.

Clark

Yeah, all of us were sitting on the floor, laying on the floor.

Sunny

So we had FloorChella, we had CouchChella, we had BedChella, and then it was also pouring rain. So we were like

Vanessa

ReclinerChella

Sunny

ReclinerChella. And it was also pouring rain, so we were like RainChella.

Clark

Yeah,

Vanessa

RainChella

Clark

Yeah, all the different chellas.

Vanessa

What if we said something else? Oh, Kindle Chella.

Clark

Kindle Chella.

Vanessa

It was Kindle Chella because like there were some performances that I was watching, and Ed was like could not be bothered to watch. He was like on his Kindle reading his books. Yeah.

How Coachella Livestream Works

Clark

That's funny. So good.

Sunny

for anyone who doesn't know, Coachella, they've started live streaming all the stages throughout both weekends. Starting at 4 p.m. Yeah, which includes the main stage, the outdoor theater, the Sahara tent. They do the Sonora stage and Gobi and Mojave. quasar.

Vanessa

Which are all names for what, Sunny?

Sunny

Deserts. Not quas, not quasar. Wait, is that a is that a desert?

Clark

No.

Sunny

Okay.

Clark

No, that's like a quasar, like a celestial body.

Sunny

Oh, okay.

Clark

It's a space term.

Sunny

Vanessa's pointing out that all of the stages are named after deserts, which I know that, I but I did not put it together. Process.

Clark

Not until our friend Aaron just kind of said it in passing what we were watching together.

Sunny

Sorry, okay. Don't mind me. Um, so yeah, we still, you know, despite Vanessa being in Iowa, tried to stay true to that, and she also did FloorChella, and so did Clark and I. So this episode is going to be us rehashing our our weekend.

Clark

Who did y'all watch on Friday?

Vanessa

So I wasn't fully focused on it like I'm sure you guys were. So I just kind of put it on as we were doing things, but I did watch most of Dabeull. That was just me. Ed was like doing stuff around the house.

Clark

Hell yeah.

Vanessa

And then he came over and he watched Teddy Swims with me. I think that's the only full set we watched, and that was awesome. Yeah.

Clark

Yeah, that's great.

Vanessa

He brought out Joe Jonas and I texted Sunny was like, They're doing when you look me in the eyes. I know.

Clark

I know Joe looked like such a dad.

Sunny

I had just gotten out of a gig that I was playing, and when I got in the car, you texted me that and I was like, Oh shoot. Like, can you send me the link so I can watch it while I drive? I mean, listen while I drive. So then I was listening to it. And then after that, Teddy Swims brought out Vanessa Carlton.

Vanessa

Yes.

Sunny

So I was excited about that. And when I got back to our place, I'm like out of breath. Are you guys? Did you see Vanessa Carlton? And they're like, what? They being Aaron and Clark.

Clark

Yeah, I had Aaron over, so we were watching stuff.

Sunny

So they they missed Vanessa Carlton. But I'm sorry, I didn't mean to deviate from your day. So what after Teddy Swim's?

Vanessa

I mean, that was the last full thing we saw. I remember we saw the XX kind of. I was like falling asleep. So I think I fell asleep through the XX. Ed was reading on his Kindle. And then we woke up and we watched like a song or two of Katseye, and then we went to bed. Honestly. I was so tired.

Sunny

You're three hours ahead?

Vanessa

I'm two hours ahead. Two. Okay. We started at six. When Teddy Swims was playing, it was like eight, I think.

Sunny

Yeah.

Clark

Oh, yeah.

Vanessa

So it was late.

Clark

It's like reasonable if you don't have something going on the next day, like how late to stay up.

Vanessa

Oh, totally.

Clark

For almost all of it, but then it's like the main headliner for Coachella. It's like for your time, it's so Justin Bieber.

Vanessa

It wasn't on until 1 a.m., 1 30 a.m. Yeah.

Sunny

You did it though.

Vanessa

We did it, but I wasn't like, I remember at the end of it, it was like 3 a.m. and I told Ed, I was like, thanks for staying up with me. He was like, Yeah, stayed up. You were sleeping the whole time until Justin Bieber came on. I was like, oops. He woke me up. He woke me up and was like, hey, Justin's on. I was like, okay.

Clark

Babe Justin's on.

Sunny

So on Friday, we watched it at our place with Aaron, who was on our 46th episode. So the three of us were just here chilling. Clark made some cocktails for them and he made us dinner. So we enjoyed it like that. We did Teddy Swims, Devo, Moby, Sabrina Carpenter, and then Aaron took off because it was like pretty late by then. And then Clark and I watched Disclosure.

Vanessa

Oh, yeah, Disclosure. Maybe this weekend I'll watch more of the ones that I missed that I really wanted to see, but I was just so exhausted.

Sunny

If you have time to tune in to Sabrina Carpenter at all, I want you to because I'm curious what you think. We loved it.

Clark

Yeah.

Sunny

Yeah.

Vanessa

It was like way better than what we saw at way different.

Clark

I wouldn't say it was like way better. It was a matter of like she's like, Yeah, this is my headlining Coachella set. I know it's gonna be streamed all these places. I'm gonna go huge on it.

Sunny

Yeah, I would say the production value of it was just as much as Lady Gaga's. Yeah. Oh really? As far as like the sets go and like the dancers and each uh how different every number was. Like it was, yeah, in my in my opinion.

Clark

Yeah, for sure. For the first like five songs, just the uh the arrangements the live band was doing of the songs, her band was killing it. Just the music, you know, outside of like if you even like her music or not, you go, yeah, these musicians are absolutely destroying it right now. So we were you know impressed with the whole thing. It was fun too. One of my highlights from Friday was Devo because we were watching it with Aaron, and Aaron knows them really well because he grew up listening to Devo, and his dad's a huge Devo fan.

Vanessa

What kind of music is Devo?

Clark

They're the ones who do uh Whipit. Dom Dom Dom Dom Dom. Whip it. Whip it good. I mean, they're like they're kind of this weird almost they come from like punk band backgrounds, but they're like an art band. Like their visuals are super crazy, they put on these like suits that they tear apart as they're playing and stuff. It's it's very like performance art y.

Sunny

Yeah.

Clark

Um, so that was fun to watch with Aaron.

Sunny

Totally. Also, it was nice watching Sabrina Carpenter with Aaron because Aaron is a huge movie buff, and I'm not at all. And I think the theme throughout Sabrina's whole performance was Hollywood. And so there were all these Hollywood references that she was pulling that Aaron was catching, and I wasn't. And so later on social media, I saw a few videos where people were kind of like weirded out by it, thought the set was creepy, or I don't know, just kind of didn't get it. And I was like, Well, if you don't know the references, then yeah, it is kind of creepy having like a girl in a car by herself driving, you know, with an old cop pulling her over and be like, Where are you going? You know. What was that reference? Clark said psycho.

Clark

Yeah, that's what Aaron and I were talking about. Because the beginning of that film with this woman who basically is in like trouble and she's escaping on she's on the run.

Sunny

So yeah, I'd be curious. If you have a moment to tune in, I'd be curious to your thoughts.

Clark

Yeah, check it out. It's a pretty big spectacle.

Saturday Watch Party Marathon

Sunny

Okay, Saturday. That was like our big planned day. We went over to my mom's house and watched on her TV, which is much bigger than ours, and Clark brought the sound bar. We had our friend Quintin come over, and then we also had a Zoom chat with some of our friends in Grass Valley, and then I think you popped in once and a couple other people. So there was that aspect of it. And then we started the day with Jack White and then Noga Erez, Fuji Kaze, Nine Inch Noize, Rezz, David Byrne, and then Justin Bieber. So we had a packed day. Yeah. What about you?

Vanessa

I turned it on and was flipping back and forth between Los Hermanos Flores and Jack White. Then I watched Addison Rae just because like I only know her to be like a TikTok person. So I was like, why is she doing headlining Coachella? So tuned into that, but that was when my YouTube app failed. So then I was watching on my phone for a little bit. And then it came back for Royal Otis, which I thought was great.

Sunny

Oh, cool.

Vanessa

Sombe, I watched a little bit, Nine Inch Noize, The Strokes, Rezz, David Byrne, and Justin Bieber.

Sunny

Oh, so we have a little bit of a different thing.

Vanessa

Between like Somber, Nine Inch Noise, Strokes, Rez, David Byrne. I was like in and out of sleep. Like I would fall asleep, and then I'd wake up and like would watch a few, and I was like, oh, this is sick, and then I'd like doze up back to sleep. And then I'd wake up and I did see a good chunk of all those people.

Clark

What type of music is uh Los Hermanos Flores?

Vanessa

They're a Salvadorian Latin group.

Clark

Oh, sick. Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. Like a big group, like a banda, right? Like Yeah. Yes, yes, yes. Okay, cool. That's that's awesome.

Vanessa

They were cool, yeah. It was cool to see everybody with their like Salvadorian flags and the crowd and stuff. Yeah.

Clark

That's awesome.

Vanessa

Represent. I know. That's cool.

Clark

Knowing that now too, I'll try and tune in for some of that on this coming Saturday.

Sunny

Yeah, they were fun. And then Jack White, of course, was the surprise artist. They didn't add him until last week. Oh, really? I didn't know that. So they're doing this now. They're adding like a bigger artist that performs early in the day. Like Ed Sheeran last year. Yeah, yeah, exactly.

Clark

Exactly like that. Yeah.

Sunny

And uh, I think it was also Weezer last year.

Clark

Yes.

Sunny

And then I just noticed yesterday that Kacey Musgraves has been added. So she's playing that same slot that Jack White did.

Vanessa

Oh, that makes sense why everybody was like trying to get Griz to Coachella. Did you see that?

Sunny

Yeah, well, he put up a post. Yeah. Yeah, making it seem like he's headed over there.

Clark

So yeah, we saw that last night. Yeah, and people are like, we're like, huh, what do you mean by that? He's like, oh, anything fun happening this weekend.

Vanessa

Yeah, like is he actually gonna be there or is he just trying to get there, you know?

Standouts Jack White And Noga Erez

Clark

I don't know. People are speculating that he might do like a surprise set at the DoLab at DoLab, which would be super fun. For us, though, on Saturday, Jack White blew most other stuff out of the water for just like how incredible of a performance it was, I feel like.

Sunny

Yeah.

Clark

At least for at least for me, I was just like, holy shit.

Sunny

Yeah, Clark was so into it. Not that I wasn't, but I just he you seem so surprised by it, but to me, I'm kind of like, duh.

Clark

It was it was mostly the last couple times I'd seen him sing. I thought his, you know, he's just run ragged on his voice because of all the intense stuff he does. But his voice sounded uh insane. Like his voice sounded so good. That's what I was happy about.

Sunny

I mean, he has like one of the most popular songs of all time, the Seven Nation Army, yeah, with well the what that's with the white stripes, of course. Right. Of course he closed with that.

Clark

Yeah, yeah.

Sunny

Oh, I did not catch that. Um, and then I just want to shout out real quick Noga Erez, who is a Israeli rapper. I was just so happy for her the whole time because it was so hard for them to get here from Israel. They just hit all these roadblocks getting here. Um, like some of their equipment in Egypt, they were like, No, you can't take down the plane. So they had to turn around, go back to Israel, put it in storage. What else, Clark?

Clark

The whole team, it's like a whole mixture of different countries that everyone's from. So they were all coming from different places. She was sharing like group chats in between her team, and they're all like, Well, I'm coming from this country, like coming to here to come to the United States and they're all Lebanon, like, yeah, it's it's that they even made it, you know, her like sound crew and her dancers, like, you know, and she was trying to really put on like a good show, so it was cool to to see it come together.

Sunny

Yeah, I was happy for her.

Clark

Yeah. Yeah, and she has a she uh released a song, I think, recently with uh Armani White the the dude who has the big T shirt, Billie Eilish. That dude. Yeah. So he came out and performed that with her, and that and that was uh fun. Like they Yeah, that's dope. It was cool to have that feature show up.

Surprise Guests And Viral Moments

Vanessa

Sh were there a lot of big surprise guests? I don't besides Vanessa Carlton and Joe Jonas for Teddy Swims. I didn't really see many. Oh yeah.

Clark

Oh yeah, yeah.

Vanessa

But for these two days, were there any for these two days, Friday and Saturday, that were bigger?

Sunny

Um David Guetta brought out J Lo.

Clark

Oh, yeah, yeah. No big deal.

Sunny

Oh, really? Yeah. Sabrina Carpenter had some cameos. Well, Will Ferrell came out during her set.

Clark

Will Ferrell.

Sunny

And then um really also Susan Sarandon had a whole monologue, which was crazy. What? Yeah, yeah.

Clark

We were like, it was trippy. It was so I liked it. Yeah, it was it was cool. It was so they could do like a set change. Basically, she was playing Sabrina's older self. She was like reminiscing about like, oh, you know, it's it's so trippy be you know, being famous, and you're like trying to do regular family stuff at the same time. And it was interesting, it was like an interesting monologue for sure.

Sunny

Lizzo came out with Sexyy Red, Kaytranada, and Paris Hilton. Oh yeah, I saw that.

Clark

Oh I saw Lizzo, yeah, yeah. I saw that later in social media.

Sunny

Oh, you did, okay. Yeah, yeah. Oh, John Summit had a surprise set at the do lab, which we had so much fun watching.

Clark

Yeah, that was probably the most we've been into a set of John Summit.

Sunny

Jacob Lusk came out with Moby. He was an American Idol contestant, and he was incredible. His voice was very powerful. Oh, David Lee Roth also came out with Teddy Swims. Oh, that's right. That's right. We were watching that.

Clark

Oh, yeah. That's right. That's when Vanessa texted him, was like, everybody looking up who David Lee Roth is.

Vanessa

Yeah, I was like, what? And honestly, I would have too if Ed wasn't like, oh, um Van Halen. I knew that.

Clark

There was a clip I saw on Instagram, someone posted. It's literally a moment when David Lee Roth and Teddy Swims are in the middle of singing jump. Uh-huh. And I swear David looks at Teddy Swims, and they're both like have their mics away from them. And I swear David's like, these kids don't know who I am. Like jokingly too. That's funny. I swear it looks like he's like, they don't know who I am. They don't know who I am. Which, if he did say that while they're performing, that's a hilarious thing.

Vanessa

Like you saw him mouth it.

Clark

It's yeah, it's like because his or it was just a look. You know, when you see like NBA players or like pro athletes and they're like covering their face, talking to each other. Yeah. It looked, it was like that, you know, like just in this quick moment. And and I went, I wonder if he said that, because that would be really funny.

Vanessa

I felt like nobody knew who Vanessa Carlton was. So did I. Because I feel like nobody cheered, and then once they started the you know, the piano riff, everyone was like, ah right, right.

Clark

That's so funny.

Sunny

Thundercat came out with suicidal tendencies. Did you know that? Oh because he used to be the bass player for them, so that makes total sense.

Clark

That does make a lot of sense.

Sunny

And then Big Sean came out with Levity.

Clark

Yeah, we missed that.

Vanessa

Oh no, oh, I did see that. I did see on online. Oh no, I didn't catch it, but I saw it online. Yeah.

Justin Bieber Set Debate

Clark

So then the last thing Saturday is Justin. Vanessa, what did you think about Justin Bieber's?

Vanessa

So Ed woke me up right when it started. Yeah, yeah. But I'm not familiar with a lot of his new stuff, which was I think most the majority of the beginning of his hour, right? Was like all his new music. Yeah. Yeah. So I kind of dozed off a little bit in the beginning. But I thought he sounded great when I listened to the first few ones. And I was so happy that he was like, okay, because I had, you know, I think we talked about this before. I had seen clips of performances where he just like didn't look good and maybe was under the influence of stuff. So I was a little worried, but I don't keep up with him. So I I know you know I didn't know what was gonna what what to expect. So I was just happy that he seemed okay and sounded great. And but then I woke back up right before he started doing his like little YouTube karaoke session.

Clark

That is like a perfect.

Vanessa

And I remember I like sent uh like a video to you guys. I was like, is he really just pulling up stuff from his YouTube? But then I thought it was cool because like that's how he started and like got discovered was on YouTube, yeah, for sure. So I was like, oh, that's kind of cute, you know. And then there was a part where he was like harmonizing with his younger self, and I was like, oh my god, that's like so adorable.

Clark

Yeah, yeah, it was so sweet.

Vanessa

Um, when he played baby, I'm glad that it was off of YouTube and like what he sounded like back when he did it because I don't know that it would hit the same if it was like his voice now singing baby a whole octave lower, you mean yeah two, yeah. And I I just I really wanted to hear one less lonely girl. I'm sorry. I was like writing it in the comments and the because he I was like, oh my god, he's literally looking at the live chat right now. I'm gonna like comment and be like, One less lonely girl. But you and a million other people. I know there's like a million chats going on at the same time, just gets lost in the chat. But that was like my favorite part because it was like all the throwbacks, and that's the Justin that I know.

Sunny

So you didn't find yourself thinking he's not doing enough or it's low budget.

Vanessa

I mean, the thought crossed my mind for a second, but I was just so happy that he was like okay, I guess. And like I was just loving like the throwbacks, and it was like small little clips, right? So I was like, well, we get to hear a lot of these. Like, if he had just done like the full songs, we probably wouldn't have heard as many, you know? Oh yeah. But to hear small clips of so many of them, I thought was cool.

Sunny

Yeah, for sure. I love that. I love your opinion.

Vanessa

Um I haven't like done a deep dive into the internet, but I know that some people are saying that it was lazy and but I didn't know all the stuff about how he had just sold all his music and all that.

Clark

We were on Reddit and seeing what people were posting, good or bad. It just felt so silly that if you've seen him and and watched the person he's grown into and stuff, you shouldn't be surprised that he did a more like low-key performance. He's a pretty low-key guy now that he's not being puppeteered by a big company. So it's like he's probably not gonna put on that type of show.

Vanessa

No, I wasn't expecting like a gaga performance from him, you know?

Clark

Like, but it seems like some people were, and it's like, yeah, have you not been paying attention to this guy for the last like eight years?

Vanessa

He's not clocking to you, he's not clocking to you, and he's standing on business.

Clark

That was hella funny that he played that video and he's like quoting. I love that too.

Vanessa

Wally I love that too, because sometimes you're like, do they see this shit? You know, like when it goes viral and like of course they have to, but it's like when they acknowledge shit like that, I just love that.

Sunny

I think he sold merch that said that on it. Yeah, which I really love that's yeah, I'm so not in the note. I thought he was singing his butt off. And yeah, it sounded great. Sounded great. To me, it was not low effort in the sense of you know, just how much he was actually singing and not even singing over a track either.

Clark

Yeah.

Sunny

Pretty much the whole time. It was just his voice pure through the mic, which is rare.

Clark

Yeah.

Sunny

And I I thought the whole like YouTube thing, it was like a way for him to give the audience what they wanted without him having to like actually go there because he probably feels like this is me speculating, of course. Uh he probably feels like like in his heart, he can't go there. Like that's not who he is anymore. Right. You know, the new album swag and what we saw at the beginning of the performance. That's the the performer he's grown into now. So he gave us that. Plus, I thought too.

Vanessa

I thought it was so awesome that he was like on the chat, you know? Yeah, yeah. And kind of like acknowledging everybody watching from home. I love that. Right.

Sunny

I don't know about you, but I got a little surge of excitement when he like looked like I was like, guys, he's talking to us. That's what I told Ed too. I was like, he's talking to me. Yeah. The boys were getting pizza uh in the kitchen, and I was like, come back, he's talking.

Clark

Yeah, it was cute.

Sunny

Okay, well, I love that we're all on the same page because the comments on online, there's a lot of hate out there, but also a lot of love out there too.

Clark

Yeah, yeah. It's so it's definitely a yeah, it's definitely the internet.

Vanessa

Yeah, definitely right. The internet is interneting. Yeah, I definitely was like the most of the stuff that I've been seeing were like people defending his performance. Yeah. So I mean, I can't imagine that's probably coming from a lot of the hate, but I haven't read that yet.

Clark

Yeah, yeah.

Sunny

Yeah. I went to sleep sad because on the Reddit thread for Coachella, it was just all people complaining about it. And then when I woke up, it was flip-flopped. There were a lot of people sticking up for him. Oh good. So yeah.

Vanessa

I thought his set looked really cool too.

Clark

Yeah. Yeah. It was it was very much the clothing, the like style brand that he has out. When I went on his Instagram uh during the performance, I went, Wow, how much attention to detail he put into that. Like, even some of his visuals, the effects they were putting on him are really stylistically the brand he's doing. It was very seamless.

Sunny

Yeah, I mean, there were hundreds and hundreds of people involved in making this happen. So for sure. Um, yeah, you know, yeah, I was so lazy.

Sunday Sets And Global Crowd

Clark

Yeah. He also brought out Kid LaRoy to do stay, which was fun. And then he brought out Thames and WhizKid.

Sunny

Okay, Sunday. We saw Major Laser, Foster the People, Fat Boy Slim, and Carol G.

Vanessa

I saw Major Lazer and Duke Dumont. I was going back and forth between those two, and then and then caught the end of Foster the People and then Mochakk and Fat Boy Slim, which Fat Boy Slim was making us crack up so much.

Sunny

Yes, he's awesome. Yeah.

Vanessa

But then we went to bed because we were tired.

Clark

Yeah, understand. Understandable.

Vanessa

I'm just so sad I missed Karol G, but I will watch her this weekend.

Sunny

We were blown away by Foster the People.

Clark

Yes, his voice sounded incredible.

Vanessa

Yeah, I liked his little speech at the end. Yeah. Yeah.

Clark

That was sweet.

Sunny

And I also fell asleep during Karol G, and I was pissed about it when I woke up in the morning and realized that I had fallen asleep. Yeah, it looked awesome. That's especially needed right now.

Clark

She made a point of stopping multiple times during the performance, be like similar stuff to what Bad Buddy did during his you know celebration of a performance for the Super Bowl.

Sunny

And just seeing all these Latinos in the first row.

Clark

Yeah.

Sunny

Riding the rail, you know?

Clark

Yeah. Like all the flags of like all the Latin countries were just on the front rows of all the crowd, which is dope.

Sunny

Clark and I noticed that the final two headlining acts were Karol G and then a K-pop group. Yeah. It just shows how worldly Coachella is. It's awesome.

Clark

K-pop group was a big deal. It's it was like their 20th anniversary. They're like OG.

Vanessa

What was the cake pop group?

Clark

K the K pop the cake pop group. Yummy cake pop. Yeah. The uh the cake pop? Yeah.

Sunny

It sounded like it.

Clark

They uh they're called Big Bang. They've been doing it since they were like 15. So they were they were killing it. It's like a four-member group, and three of them are like active, but they actually brought out the fourth one because he's not currently doing stuff with them, but they did like a surprise. That was fun to I was kind of skipping back and forth to both.

Sunny

Yeah. Well, I want to congratulate us because we did it. We made it through all three days of Florcella.

Vanessa

Oh my god, it was rough. Yeah. I had so much dust in my nose.

Sunny

Oh gosh.

Vanessa

Stupid.

Sunny

I love the fact that we get to live stream it. Yeah. I think for next year I want to make it more of a thing and maybe more of our friends can come over something. You mean we're not gonna be at Coachella next year? Oh yeah, that's what I said. I said a brand is gonna take us with them to Coachella. Said that. Weekend two, we're gonna do FloorChella.
