Cold Open And Welcome
SunnyHey Vanessa.
VanessaYeah, Sunny?
SunnyWhat do you call two best friends that love music festivals?
VanessaHmm.
SunnyI guess you'd call them.
ClarkMusic. Festivals. Friendship. Festies.
SunnyWelcome to Festies, everybody. I'm Sunny.
VanessaAnd I'm Vanessa. Duh
SunnyThanks for joining us today.
VanessaJust kidding.
SunnyWe also have Clark with us today.
ClarkHey.
Media Approval And Festival Details
SunnyHello. We have an announcement to make. We just got approved for our first.
VanessaLet me do a drum roll. Drum roll, please.
SunnyWe just got approved for media for our first festival this year.
VanessaWoo!
SunnyThat festival is lightning in a bottle.
VanessaYay! L I B.
SunnyThank you, L I B. Which is May 20th to the 24th, 2026. And it's at Buena Vista Lake in Kern County. We have Clark with us today because Vanessa is in Iowa now, so she's not as easily accessible. So Clark and I.
VanessaI'm a little bit more easily accessible because I don't have to drive to you guys.
SunnyWell, you're more accessible for recording, less accessible for picking up and going to festivals that are on the West Coast. I know. It's okay. We're gonna get a whole new uh chunk of festivals over over yonder.
VanessaYeah.
SunnyBut yeah, we have Clark with us today because it'll be Clark who's coming with me to go to Lightning in a Bottle.
ClarkExcited.
VanessaI'm so excited for you guys because I feel like this festival feels very Bonnaroo-esque.
ClarkMm-hmm.
VanessaUh-huh. And so we're going to Bonnaroo this year, and so you guys get your own little Bonnaroo.
ClarkOh, yeah. Yeah, definitely.
SunnyHopefully less walking.
Five Pillars And Must-See Acts
ClarkI completely agree with you, Vanessa, especially doing our research and like looking at the Reddit, you know, interactions and communities and stuff. It feels like that.
SunnyIt seems like Lightning a Bottle is built around like five pillars. Obviously, there's music and performance, but then there's also art and interactive stuff. There's learning and culture, like workshops and talks. They also have yoga and movement, and then there's a marketplace. The marketplace is basically artisan vendors, you know, handmade stuff, jewelry, clothes, all that kind of stuff. This year the headliners are Empire of the Sun, Zed's Dead, and Mau P. The other acts that we're excited for are Mochakk, who we just watched on the Coachella live stream, thanks to Vanessa.
ClarkYeah, yeah.
Sunnywe're excited for we're excited for that. Daily Bread, Midnight Generation, Noga Eriz, Haute and Freddy, and Elephant Heart. And then I haven't had the opportunity to do like a deep, deep dive into the Lightning in a Bottle lineup because it's it's pretty big, but I'm excited for Barry Can't Swim. He's from Scotland and has a lot of jazz influences in his sets. I'm excited for Jada G, who I came across an RB set of hers on YouTube. You guys know that I love RB. And then also SARZ, who's a Nigerian music producer and DJ, and his genre is Afro House.
ClarkNice.
SunnySo far, those are the DJs that I'm excited for.
Origin Story And Do LaB Roots
VanessaSo I didn't know anything about Lightning in a Bottle. I had always heard about it, but I never looked into it, did any research. I've never been. So I just did a little Google search, and it said that it was actually started as like a private birthday party for the founders of the Do Lab to put this festival on. So it was Dream Rockwell and the Fleming brothers, Josh and Jesse. From 2001 to 2003, that's what it was. And then in 2004, it launched as like a public festival at Gold Creek Ranch.
ClarkMm-hmm.
VanessaNear LA-ish. And then since then, the festival's kind of just been bouncing around to different locations. It did kind of settle a little bit into the San Antonio Reservoir for like a few years. And then now since 2019, it's been at its current location at the Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation in Kern County, which is like near Bakersfield, right off I-5. And that's really that's really all I did. You already touched on all the other things that like what what it's about and um and all that, but that's how long it's been around. I didn't know that that's how long it had been around. I thought it was more of like a last 10 years. But it's been more like 20 something. So right.
SunnyIf you recognize the do lab, it sounds familiar to you because they have a stage at Coachella as well. That's where a lot of the DJ sets are.
ClarkYeah. And they bring those um. Yeah, like those fabric shade shrooms. Shrooms. Yeah. Uh and those, yeah, those are at Lightning in a Bottle as well for one of the st one of the stages. Cool. So if they go to Coachella, we got we're gonna get those.
VanessaYeah, you get a little piece of it.
ClarkMm-hmm.
VanessaSo you guys got media that's so awesome. What does it come with? Like what access do those media passes give you guys?
SunnyWe do have car camping that comes with it. So that's awesome.
VanessaNice.
SunnyYeah, yeah. I noticed on the website a ticket comes with camping, but the car camping is an extra ticket. So I'm grateful that they got us that because we'll have the truck. But it's more that we're there to like create content and then potentially we might be able to connect with some artists, but that's something we'll figure out as it gets closer. Right now, anyone involved with the do lab are running around at Coachella working very hard. Oh, yeah. I'm sure we'll start to hear from them more once that settles.
VanessaThat would be sick, though, if you can get some artist interviews. Yeah, I hope so. We'll see.
ClarkYeah, that'd that'd be incredible.
Workshops Food Art And Late Night
VanessaI love that this festival is like not just the music, but I love that they have so many other interactive experiences.
SunnyWe're looking forward to the compass, which is a it's a stage, right? An area.
ClarkWell, I I guess you could call it a a stage at this, but there's um more than 150 different speakers, so it'll be people giving talks about different subjects.
SunnyWe're gonna learn some shit.
ClarkYeah, yeah. I mean, um, yeah, in past years, I know one of the big ones that people were really excited about was there was like an expert on shrooms and just everything about mushroom culture.
VanessaI love that because I feel like mushrooms have always been just viewed as like a drug when in reality it's actually like a healing thing. And so I like that they're uh educating people on that. Yeah.
ClarkI saw that uh in my Reddit dive. People were talking about that. Um it sounds like this year they're bringing back a few of the older things from a few years ago, uh-huh, and people are really excited for that. Like one that people were blowing up on Reddit was frickfrack. It's a poker table, but you don't bet in cash. You just bet in items that you have, and you meet a bunch of people doing that, and then you win the other objects that people put in. People have like trinkets or or other stuff they have at dance festivals.
SunnyI'm also excited for Clark because they have a learning kitchen.
ClarkYeah, it sounds so sick. Uh an educational area dedicated to food-focused workshops and culinary classes in a variety of both ancient and modern kitchen traditions. Yeah, it sounds super cool.
SunnyI don't know what that means, but we'll find out.
ClarkAm I gonna get to use one of those like ancient Morcahetes that they like grind masa on or something? Like that'd be sick. Yeah, that sounds like it's all right up your alley, Clark. Yeah, yeah. When I think Sunny saw that first and she's like, Did you read all this? So perfect for you.
SunnyThere's also art classes.
ClarkYeah.
SunnyI'm just gonna drop you off.
VanessaYeah, just drop them off and pick them up later.
SunnyYeah. I'll go check out some other stuff.
ClarkFirst day of school.
SunnyA couple other things we're excited for that we found in our research is the moon room, which is a late-night ambient lounge.
VanessaWhat is this? 80s prom.
SunnyYeah, yeah. On Thursday night, they have an 80s prom themed event. Clark, we can go to prom together. We should take a prom pick.
ClarkYeah, yeah. With with some hover hands, some awkward pose.
SunnySo, yeah, Vanessa, those are the things that we're excited for.
VanessaThat sounds so fun.
ClarkLightning in a Bottle ] I think, is gonna jump up in our list of our favorite festivals. Yeah. Because more and more we read and see, it sounds like it's gonna be like a bigger, Same Same But Different which we loved going through.
Real Advice From DMs And Reddit
VanessaI was thinking the same thing when I was like looking up things on TikTok and everything. So we're stoked.
SunnySince we haven't been to this specific festival yet, we went to our followers to get some lightning in a bottle specific advice.
ClarkYep.
SunnyWe also combed through Reddit. Is it okay if I go through those specifically?
ClarkYeah, yeah, yeah.
SunnyI'm gonna read off handles as well. Okay, so this is DMs from our Instagram. Melissa Clark Kent, who's been to Lightning a Bottle many times. She said, comfy shoes, battery-powered fans for your tent. She also said that they put turf down last year, so the dust at the stages was a lot better this year, but still cover your face on the walk between stages. She said, get in and out on the way into the festival. So if you're dead from setting up camp, you have an easy dinner. She also said bring lots of shade for your camp, bring weights or sandbags for canopies because they do fly away occasionally, and it does get really windy out there. And then she also said, go to at least one class. And then she said, there's a booth near the lightning stage on the left that has a mashed potato, spinach, onion thing wrapped in phyllo dough, and they just grill it and warm it up. It's one of the cheapest, most filling things for food vendors. That was a really specific recommendation that we're going to take her up on.
ClarkFor sure.
VanessaThat sounds yummy.
SunnyThank you, Melissa. And then we have Alyssa Vega, one of our followers and a friend of Vanessa's from Long Beach, right? Mm-hmm. She said, L I B is the best, all caps. I haven't been since 2018, but my best advice is to experience everything you possibly can. Of course, the music is the biggest draw, but there are so many other activities: yoga, classes, theater, interactive art, et cetera, et cetera. Some of my fave memories are from just walking around the grounds and exploring. The creative programming is what really sets it apart from other festivals I've gone to. Thank you, Alyssa. I'm gonna move on to Reddit tips. I apologize in advance if I'm saying anybody's handle wrong. H. H. Hoffman says to bring a cot instead of an air mattress so you don't feel the bass through your body while you're trying to sleep.
ClarkThat one just like stood out to me because I wouldn't have thought about that. But once it was written, I was like, that makes a lot of sense. Yeah. It's gonna hit you no matter what. If it's loud, but that'll probably be way better. Yeah. And we have one.
SunnyAnd we have one. Um JD McDonough said there are tons of cool workshops and seminars, so don't just chase sets all day. Like, actually leave time to explore and just enjoy it instead of thinking about where you need to be next. That is super helpful for me because I'm constantly thinking about where we need to be next. Yeah. So I'm gonna try. C D Gardens said to bring a wagon, especially for things like filling up big water jugs. And then they also said to literally schedule time to roam with no agenda. Yeah, that seems to be a common theme here.
ClarkYep.
SunnyCanoe Brown also said a wagon, but their whole group uses it to carry backpacks and yoga mats and chairs, and then they go to the back of the crowd and set up like a little neighborhood to chill out. Radar from afar said to put something at your campsite that's high and easy to recognize, especially at night, like with LED lights, because it's really easy to get disoriented. And you don't want to rely on other people's landmarks because those can move, which I've experienced that. Totally. Where'd the totem go? And then they also said to be a yes person with discretion. I loved that. Thank you to everybody on Reddit for um putting your advice in writing, and to our followers for DMing us with their advice.
VanessaCan I throw in some other tips that I saw?
SunnyYeah.
VanessaSo it sounds like this place is by a lake that you can access while you're there in the festival, which is so sick. I would love to go to a festival like that. So bring your bathing suits and your floaties and your sunscreen.
ClarkOh, yes.
VanessaBecause apparently it gets very hot. And I would make sure you get in that freaking water. Like, get your hair messy. Who cares? Get your hair wet. It's gonna be really hot. It's like, you know.
SunnyI also saw somewhere to bring some water shoes if you're planning on getting them.
VanessaThat's a good one.
SunnyThey have really cheap ones on Amazon.
ClarkYeah, we know, we know about them watershoes for sure.
VanessaAnd please, for the life of God, you have time. Get your earplugs.
ClarkYes.
VanessaGet your eargasms. I think our code still works. Festies 10. Yeah. Yeah.
SunnyThanks, Vanessa, for bringing up the water. I totally would have skipped that.
VanessaYeah, that seems like the most fun part about that festival to me.
SunnyWas there anything else that you wanted to add to that you saw?
VanessaI saw that there was like a first timers guide on their page. Yeah. So definitely make sure you check that out. I think it's under the info and frequently asked questions.
ClarkI I love that they have that so prominent on just their site.
VanessaSo if you're feeling a little lost, make sure you go check that out on their page.
ClarkYeah. Yeah. We're going to also keep an eye out. People on Reddit posted that they made a design for it's my first lightning in a bottle pins. Okay. That they're just going to leave around when they get to the festival. So we're going to keep an eye out.
Free Toolkit Packing And Safety
VanessaYeah. Sunny made this cool toolkit that you guys can access on our Instagram tree link.
SunnyOh, yeah.
VanessaSunny, you want to talk about that?
Sunnysure. Yeah. I have been working on this digital toolkit for a while, which basically is just a Google Drive. It's called Festi's Toolkit, and it has an emergency lock screen image that you can download and then write your own information on it to put Azure lock screen during a festival. In case your phone gets lost, someone can contact one of your friends.
VanessaIt works. Sunny used it when she lost her phone. Yeah.
SunnyYep. I left my phone on the ground at Austin City Limits and someone contacted Clark.
ClarkPretty much instantly, too. Like right after.
SunnyThere's a day festival checklist in there. There's a camping checklist in there. There's also a Festies squad gear planner, which is a way for you and your crew to decide who's bringing what for like shared stuff, you know, like a table and a grill, or so you guys don't waste space packing double of things. There's also a Festies packing planner, and I'm the most proud of this one because I spent a long time on it. It's a Google Sheet and it has different tabs camping gear, food and kitchen, toiletries, etc. And then it also has a my pack list tab. So when you go through the different categories, there is a checkbox column. When you check it off, that item will automatically shoot over to the my pack list tab.
ClarkYeah.
SunnyDoes that make sense?
ClarkYes.
Tickets Camping Options And Meetups
SunnyOkay. That is free for all of our festies to use. And then there's also PDFs of the checklists in there as well. If you're if you're like me and need like a piece of paper to have when you're packing. So thanks for bringing that up, Vanessa. Yeah. You worked so hard on it. When you go into the folder, there's a start here document. So make sure to start there. Also, make sure to copy everything and make your own version to edit. It says that everywhere in the toolkit, but just a reminder. Again, you can find that in our Instagram bio. Please share it with your friends. Use it as much as you'd like. ClarkYeah.
SunnyCome say hi. We'll have our festies hats on. We're also planning to make some pepper totems. Have I even talked about pepper on here?
VanessaYeah, who the hell is Pepper?
unknownWho's Pepper?
SunnyPepper is our dog.
VanessaOh, Peppy Peps.
SunnyShe is a black and white bull terrier pit bull mix. So if you see a totem of a white and black dog that looks like they're mean mugging, that's us. Clark doesn't know this, but I also got us a flag. That was sick.
ClarkThat's dope.
SunnyAnd we just want to say a huge thank you to Lightning in a Bottle for having us out this year. It really means a lot to us. You know, because when you apply for media, they're looking at follower count and numbers, and we're still growing. So for all these festivals that are taking a chance on us at this stage, it genuinely means a lot.
ClarkYeah, seriously. Thank you.
SunnyWe're really excited to be there and thanks. We're really excited to be there and share the experience.
VanessaYes. Thank you so much, Lightning in a Bottle. And if you have a moment to leave us a rating and review wherever you listen to us, that really helps the podcast.
